Mike Hinson proves to be a hard taskmaster as Tom
Pachinger prepares soil for potting Georgia's first American chestnut
BC3 harvest using native Georgia Mother trees and Meadowview BC2
pollen. The nuts were harvested from the Carl Meyer tree in
Walker County last fall and over wintered by Dr Hill Craddock for the
chapter. Also planted were some pure American chestnuts from
Devils Overlook in Virginia, pure Chinese and pure Chinkapin nuts as
well as some Tennessee crosses used as controls.
Professor Martin Cipollini with the cooperation of
Berry College, allowed GaTACF to use its green house for starting the
seedlings. Eventually they were moved outdoors to grow over the
summer before being planted in the chapter's first orchard. |
