Registration of members and guest began at
9:30. Don Davis called the meeting to order at 10:15 with 50
present. There were 7 guests (2 of them children) and 5 new members.
Don gave a review of the past year’s
accomplishments and awards prior to introducing the slate of officers
named by the nominating committee. The members present voted to
approve the slate.
Don then presented the nominations for at-large
Board Members. The following board members were approved by the
members present:
President Mark Stalling took the gavel and
presented Don Davis with a plaque of American chestnut wood,
recognizing him for his tireless efforts in getting the new Georgia
chapter off the ground.
Dave Keehn, Ga. Chapter tree identifier, spoke
of one of our largest mother trees – the Fowler tree at Fort Mountain
in Fannon County. It is over 60 feet tall with a 14” diameter. It
is at 3200 feet elevation near the Appalachian Trail. There are
hundreds of sprouts from 2 to 15 feet tall growing near this tree as
well.
President Mark Stallings then outlined his goal
for the chapter in the next year:
1.
Propagate a Georgia Genetic Tree
2.
Increase Chapter membership to 500
3.
Develop leaders among the membership to carry on future goals
of the chapter
He then spoke about the Chestnut Memories video
he is producing – a history of the American chestnut with stories
from those who have lived with the King of the Forest. It will be an
hour long program aired on a local cable network in the fall to about
17,000 households. It will then be available for distribution on CD.
Dianne Smith then gave the Treasurer’s report
(at end of this report). She reiterated our portion of donations
made to TACF. We receive $15 from each membership from Regular
Memberships all the way to Gold Memberships. We receive 100% of any
contribution designated to our local chapter up to $99.99 and 75% of
all $100 and over. Our greatest expense during the past year has
been for printing and mailing the newsletter and the purchase of a
color printer for the newsletter. As of May 31, 2005, our balance
was $1237.00.
Mr. Huff and Carl Meyer donated seedlings for a
fund raising raffle. The raffle earned $225 for the chapter and all
members who purchased a raffle ticket received a tree.
In addition to the raffle money and dues for 5
new members, $96 was collected in the donation bucket.
Don Davis then explained the field trips that
would take place after lunch.
1.
Group 1: Pocket American Chestnut trees along the footpath
with an easy walk
2.
Group 2: Pocket American Chestnut trees with more of a
challenging hike for viewing
3.
Off site to The Blueberry Farm
4.
Off site to Carl Meyer’s Farm
Paul Sisco, coordinator of the Southern Chapter
breeding program, spoke about pollination procedures and the
back-cross breeding program. He urged members to join with the
Tennessee chapter when they emasculate and pollinate their trees in
order to learn proper procedures. Lisa Worthen, who represented Hill
Craddock and the Tennessee breeding program, explained that they may
be a few days ahead of our trees and offered to meet with any who
wished to come up. A sign up sheet for notifications of this trip
was distributed.
There were 3 amendments approved by the
membership.
